Weekend Free Activities

Wow! Have you guys been keeping up with Pratt Park in the Coca-Cola Live Positively America's Favorite Park Contest? You may have heard about it on the news. I somehow managed to get into voting when Pratt Park was way down on the list and I have to confess, I have been letting some things slide around the house in order to spend time voting. Pratt Park is currently #2 with their eyes firmly on the #1 spot. If you are interested in helping out, you can visit for lots of information about the contest and how to vote (hint: it’s super easy). It makes me pretty happy to see that so many from all around are supporting Pratt Park. We've been there and I have to say it's a great park. Winning this grant would make it even better. Once Pratt Park gets First Place they have to keep it until voting is over in July, so we need lots of help.

In between voting and “checking in” to Pratt Park, maybe you will want to find something to do this weekend. Here is your list of some fun family-friendly FREE things to do around the river region.

2012 Summer Bucket List

I've been noticing that Bucket Lists are all the rage nowadays. I believe the saying it orginated with the phrase "kick the bucket" and is a list of things you want to do before you "kick the bucket."

Most recently I have found lots of people making Summer Bucket Lists -things they want to do during the summer (internet search or look on Pinterest for Summer Bucket List).

So as not to be left out, I submit to you the River Region Family Summer Bucket List 2012 Edition:

(Most of the items on our list are free-because that's how we roll. All are in the River Region area. Click on the clickable links in each item for more info.)

Take a walk around Blount Cultural Park's walking trails and the Shakespeare Garden & Amphitheater. Then feed the ducks. Have a picnic.

Take a walk by the Riverfront and then cool off at the Amphitheater Splash Pad

See a movie (free or cheap)

Go fishing (no license needed on 6/9/12)

Pick blueberries (or some other produce)

Play in the Artworks gallery at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

Go to a library storytime (Montgomery, Prattville, Wetumpka)

Go ice skating

Have a picnic in a park that you have never been to (Montgomery, Autauga, Elmore)

Build something

Go to a parade

Go play in the Hands On Gallery at the Alabama Department of Archives and History Museum

Visit the Alabama Cattleman's Mooseum

Tour the First White House of The Confederacy and Alabama State Capital

See some fireworks!

Go roller skating

Go to a music festival

Spend some time with a shelter pet (Montgomery, Elmore, Autauga)

See last year's summer staycation post for even more ideas!

I know that some of you have some pretty awesome ideas, so please share- what's on your Summer Bucket List?

Weekend Activities 6/2/12

A few things this weekend:
If you like yard sales, like I do, you might want to check out the World's Widest Yard Sale. In Montgomery the location is Cramton Bowl and it runs from 6 am to 6 pm on Saturday.
The Splash Pad has been down for repairs but according to the Riverfront Facilities Facebook page it's now back up and running. You can check them out for updates.
If you like Farmer's Markets, like I do, you will enjoy the Shoppes at Eastchase Farmer's Market from 7 am to Noon every Saturday this summer through August 25. We picked up some cornmeal from the Oakview Farms Granary booth and made what we call the "best cornbread ever' using the recipe on the bag.

Free Fishing Day 6/9/12

Get those fishing poles ready! Free Fishing Day in Alabama is next Saturday!

Each calendar year, the Commissioner of Conservation and Natural Resources designates a "Free Fishing Day" for the public to fish recreationally in public waters without a fishing license. Saturday, June 9, 2012, had been designated as Free Fishing Day.

There is an exemption of the usual fishing license requirement on that day. Some lakes may still require fees and permits, and owner’s permission is required to fish private ponds.

Go here to find a place to fish in your area.
