EcoMax Today! and Tomorrow!

Confession: I had never been to Hampstead farm before. I know, shame on me. It's just pretty far from my house. I'm so glad we went out there today. It's so cute-I wish I could pick it up and bring it home with me.

You have probably already seen my earlier post about the EcoMax event but we went out there and I wanted to share about our trip. First, make sure to stop at the entrance and pick up a booklet with a schedule and the list of exhibitors and a nifty reusable shopping bag with the EcoMax logo on it. (Sweet!)

The exhibitors are mostly set up just behind the big red barn. Many of them have free goodies like pencils, shopping bags, coloring books, calendars, lip balm and coupons. You can also buy local honey and organic grains from the Oakview Farms booth. Earth Fare was out there with snacks and you can enter to win their table full of Earth Fare organic groceries that they have on display. (I've got my fingers crossed.) We listened in on the workshop about Honeybees for a few minutes and then we stopped at the Hampstead Institute Farms booth where the kids got to plant a sunflower seed to bring home.

I enjoyed the photo album with before and after pictures of the Hampstead Downtown Farm. Very cool!

It was also fun just walking around the garden area. The kids enjoyed looking at all the plants and guessing what they were before we looked at the tags.

Tomorrow, Goodwill will be there collecting items for their stores. (There is a list of things that they don't accept so make sure to check it before you lug all your old junk out there.) There will also be a company collecting electronics for recycling. (Some items cost, so check the website before you go, again.)
There will be workshops on Honeybees, Organic Gardening, Organic Lawn Care and the Alabama Rain Barrell workshop.  I would try to check it out tomorrow, if you didn't get to go today. It's sure to be a good time and you might learn something.

EcoWeek and EcoMax Sustainable Living Event 4/22-4/30

Lots of good things going on this week for EcoWeek. I am really looking forward to this. It looks fun and educational! Hampstead Institute Downtown Farm Grand Opening
The farm is located in downtown Montgomery on the banks of the Alabama River below Overlook Park and behind the Montgomery Advertiser building.

50 Candy-Free Easter Basket Ideas

Fun things to put in Easter baskets that aren't candy. If you are a procrastinator, print this list and take it with you tonight when you go shopping ;) or if you already have your baskets done use as inspiration for next year. Most of these things can be found at the dollar stores and the Dollar Spot at Target.

Candy-free Easter Egg Stuffers (these things are small enough to fit in the plastic eggs):

Play-doh (they make egg-shaped ones for easter)
Stickers (cut sheets or strips or buy the small individual ones)
Temporary tattoos
Small boxes of raisins
Money (coins or small bills)
Small figures (like Polly Pocket or other small toys or animals)
Barrettes, ribbons or bows
Bubbles (found the small ones in the party favor section at Walmart)

Candy-Free Easter Basket Fillers:

Books! (You could go bunny or spring theme or favorite characters.)
Gardening stuff-shovels, seeds, gloves, small pots to plant in.
Small Lego sets
Card games
Small stuffed animals
Character washcloths (found at Dollar Tree)
Kid-friendly music cds (We like Wee Sing)
Arts and crafts sets- (Michael's usually has bins full of  $1 craft kits-use a coupon for bigger savings)

Dinosaur Fossil Kit (dollar tree)
DVDs and microwave popcorn
Matchbox or Hot Wheels or other small cars or vehicles.
Fun toothbrush, kids flossers and toothpaste
Bubble bath
Coloring books
Painting sets
Flip flops
Action toys like jumpropes, yoyos, whiffle ball sets, kites, frisbees, sand toys (most of these you can find at the dollar stores.)

Easter basket treats that aren't candy:

Candy Free Easter Basket Fillers
GoGo Squeez applesauce pouches
Buddy Fruit Squeeze Fruit or fruit bites (found in the produce department but not refrigerated)
Brothers All Natural Fruit Crisps (found in the canned fruit aisle)
Annies Cheddar Bunnies or fruit snacks or pretzels (all shaped like bunnies-perfect for Easter)

One more cute idea:
I LOVE the idea of growing real grass in your Easter basket. (I am totally doing it next year.) Line an old basket with plastic. Put a layer of soil then some grass seeds. Cover with another thin layer of soil and water lightly. Keep the soil moist and in about a week you will have a living Easter basket to use for decorating or to make an extra special gift basket.

Free Vacation Home Checks Montgomery

Vacation season is quickly approaching.  Did you know that if you live in the city of Montgomery, you can have the Montgomery Police Department check your house for you while you are on vacation? Call  241-2651 (the number for the Montgomery Police Dispatch office) and tell the person that you would like the police to check your house while you are away on vacation. They will ask you some questions such as the dates of departure and return, how many cars are at the house, will you leave any lights on and are there any other people that will be checking your house or bringing in mail for you. The VIPS (Volunteers in Police Service) are actually the ones that do the checking. Every day while you are away, they go to the house and make sure that things are as they are supposed to be. When you return from vacation you call back to let them know that you are back. It's a free service that not many people seem to know about, but it's a very valuable service that the VIPS perform for the City of Montgomery.

Free Things To Do in Montgomery: Feed The Ducks At Shakespeare

This morning we went to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival to chase feed the ducks and geese. It's something that doesn't cost much money and it's a good get-outside-and-get-some-fresh-air activity. The only cost is what it takes to buy a cheap loaf of bread if you don't have some going stale around your house. Today, we took some really cheap cereal that no one in our house would eat.

Feeding the weird looking ducks.
We enjoyed it so much that we might make it a weekly thing. We went early (around 9) and it was really nice out. There were lots of people out running on the trails around the park. I haven't been in a while and I was just a tiny bit afraid that the geese might get a little mean, but they didn't at all. They were really friendly. After the geese and ducks lost interest, we started throwing the food in the lake and the turtles were coming from everywhere to gobble it up. We wished we had more food and decided that next time we would bring more.

Turtles in the lake at Shakespeare
The park is so nice. There are tables that would be great for a picnic. (You would probably have to share with the critters, though.) You could also take a nice long walk or run. We didn't have enough time for a walk today, but we will plan for that next time.

The duck that kept grabbing up all the cereal that we threw to the turles.

Public service announcement: When you go make sure that you schedule enough time to clean your shoes off before you get back in your car. Just trust me. Oh, and bring hand sanitizer.

Kids Sandals $3 at Family Dollar

Family Dollar has their kids Kidgets sandals for only $4. The price is in their current ad, but the tag on the shoes reads $4, so it's not really a sale price. With a $1 coupon from their website that makes them only $3. (The coupon for $1 off mens, ladies or kids sandals was on the last page of coupons.)  I know they are cheap but they are pretty cute and at that price, so what if they don't last long.

The pictures are of the ones we've gotten so far.
There are also flip flops for $1 and you may be able to use the $1 coupon on them to make them free. (I haven't tried that yet, because they didn't have the size I needed in flip flops.)

I have to say that we hardly ever go to Family Dollar, but I noticed these sandals in the ad and I had been looking for some inexpensive ones for a little while with no luck. There are lots of other coupons on their website that might make pretty good deals on other things in store, too.
