Alabama Department of Archives and History Museum

We love this place! There are cool things for grown ups to see in the galleries, but I can't get my kids to leave the Hands On Gallery. There is a part called Grandma's Attic (that is way bigger than I remember it from when I was a kid) where there are old phones, toys, clothes, hats and other "artifacts" and they are all for kids to play with!! There are educational videos and drawers of artifacts to pull out and look through.
If you are a homeschooler (or even if you are not) you might be interested in the Discovery Boxes. You and your child can choose a box to explore that relates to an area that you are studying or that interests. There are boxes for such things like The Korean War, World War II, cotton and airplanes but many more are listed on the website. On the website under Education you can find Activity Sheets which include many interesting sheets you can print out and use with your kids. My favorite (because I am a nerd and I secretly hope my kids will be, too) is the History Hunts. Print out the sheet with pictures and bring it with you to circle the items as you locate them in the galleries-like a scavenger hunt!
The museum is open Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30. For directions and parking info check out their website.
